Clients seeking therapy may not realize the impact that their traumatic histories have on their day-to-day functioning. Our trauma plays a significant role in our emotions, behaviors, thinking patterns and even our relationships. When it comes to Trauma-Informed Therapy, clients are regarded with a more “holistic view” of the individual rather than just focusing on changing behaviors. This modality involves guiding clients to process the impact their trauma has had on them while building on the strength and resilience of clients in the context of their environment and communities. In addition, Trauma-Informed Therapy avoids practices that can re-traumatize those with a history of trauma.
While exposed to in-depth education on trauma in their training, many therapists are not “trauma informed". Treatment providers may not feel prepared to effectively address a client’s trauma-related issues effectively. Trauma-informed therapists differ by integrating an awareness of trauma into all aspects of treatment while also prioritizing the safety of the client.
Trauma-informed therapy isn’t just for people with more obvious traumatic backgrounds such as victims of a violent crime. It can be helpful in addressing challenges with anxiety, depression, and racial trauma, as well. Trauma-Informed Therapy operates from a view that traumatic experiences tie closely with behavioral health problems.
Your therapist at some point will ask you about your traumatic background. Early on in therapy, your therapist will assess your skills to cope with whatever heavy feelings that may come up on the topic of trauma. Sometimes the therapy can be exhausting as you are processing emotions and memories that you’re not used to. But a good trauma therapist will prioritize your safety at all times.
Our private-pay fees range depending on the therapist and type of therapy (EMDR, individual, couples, or family).
