Why I became a Therapist:
Throughout my entire childhood, I struggled with divorced parents, family conflict, anxiety, low self-esteem, and feelings of isolation and loneliness. When I was a sophomore in high school, it was the darkest time of my life; that was when I started seeing the school counselor. She was a consistent, unconditional, positive influence in my life, and she provided psychoeducation on different communication skills, personality types, and attachment styles. Through our work together, she slowly gave me the tools to see not only that I was not the problem, but, more importantly, that I was not alone. She changed my life and showed me a realm within psychology that I found fascinating. I kept asking myself, "Why do people think and act the way that they do?" That curiosity, paired with my goal to be a positive influence in others' lives like my high school counselor, helped me get to where I am today.
Describe your therapeutic approach and what makes it unique?
My main focus as a therapist is helping individuals understand why they currently behave and think the way that they do. My philosophy is that we are who we are today because of our past experiences, whether environmental or relational. I utilize curiosity, empathy, and compassion to help individuals develop awareness of the origins of their thought patterns, reactions, behaviors, and activations — also known as triggers. Awareness allows acknowledgement, acknowledgement allows motivation, and motivation allows change.
