Joy comes to Provia Psychology with experience working with adults, children, adolescents, couples, and families. She is trained in using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and trauma-informed modalities to help clients with depression and anxiety, and those who have experienced trauma in its different forms, including childhood, intergenerational and structural trauma.
Joy is warm and personable and uses a strengths-based, client-centered approach to help her clients identify their strengths and understand how to build on them to heal and grow as a healthy person. She guides clients in building insight into how their childhood and adult environment can have a direct impact on their mental health and emotional well-being. Joy’s previous career was in the field of education where she educated people on integrating social justice into their curriculum and teaching and helped implement policies and practices in universities that were culturally responsive and addressed disparities based on race, ethnicity, language, immigrant status, gender, gender identity, sexuality, socioeconomic class, physical and cognitive disabilities, and religious beliefs.
Joy focuses on working with adolescents and couples as her specialty. With adolescents, Joy utilizes a developmental approach that recognizes the client’s transition from child to young adulthood and the many issues and struggles that can come with this transition. With couples, she emphasizes good communication skills as part of the foundation of any relationship and utilizes her training and experience to help couples break negative cycles and see themselves as being on the same team, rather than as adversaries as they work through specific issues that are a challenge to having a healthy and fulfilling relationship.
Joy’s therapeutic approach is also informed by the understanding of how the oppressive structure of our society contributes to people’s internal and external conflicts. Joy’s work recognizes the impact of current and historical trauma on our sense of self and sense of belonging.
Joy is a registered associate MFT (#117183) currently working under the supervision of licensed Clinical Social Worker Daniel Brezenoff (#23543).
